Øystein Johansen is a Norwegian theatre director and dramaturg working with physical theatre, text-based performance and devised processes.
His work explores how movement, spatial composition and performer presence can generate dramaturgy before psychological interpretation or narrative structure. Rather than approaching characters through psychology, he often develops physical scores that allow the performers’ bodies to carry the emotional and narrative tension of a piece.
Recurring themes in his work include isolation, spectatorship and the unstable boundary between beauty and violence. His performances frequently place the audience in close proximity to the performers, creating situations where attraction and discomfort coexist.
Johansen develops his projects through Bunnyhead Productions, where he has worked as artistic director since 2013.
